www.eurweb.com – *Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick named a new chief of staff Tuesday, a day after the woman who previously held the post resigned amid allegations that she and the mayor lied under oath about an affair.

Kandia Milton, who has served as deputy chief of staff and liaison to Detroit's City Council, was appointed to Christine Beatty's job, Kilpatrick announced in a written statement released Tuesday.

In a letter to Kilpatrick that was released by his office on Monday, Beatty said she could no longer effectively carry out her duties.

A prosecutor launched an investigation last week into the allegations, which surfaced when the Detroit Free Press detailed sexally-tinged text messages between Kilpatrick and Beatty.

Both Kilpatrick and Beatty testified in a trial last summer that they did not have a physical relationship in 2002 and 2003, when the messages were reportedly sent. The 14,000 messages examined by the newspaper reveal the two carried on a flirty dialogue about where to rendezvous and how to hide their various hookups.

A conviction of lying under oath can bring up to 15 years' imprisonment.

Meanwhile, Kilpatrick, who hasn't been seen or heard publicly since last week, will break his silence on the unfolding scandal, in a speech this evening at 7:30pm from his church, Greater Emanuel Institutional Church.

It was also announced that Detroit public radio station, WDET, will carry the address live.

"There will be no audience. There will be no reporters allowed inside. There will be no still photography allowed inside. The mayor will not do any interviews," according to James Canning, the mayor's spokesman. (News - Entertainment) Views:
